CASE STUDIESTransforming security awareness training at Kelowna International Airport

READ ON

After Transport Canada selected Kelowna International Airport (YLW) to implement the regulatory Airport Security Program for Class 2 airports, YLW turned to Harper Learning once again to develop a comprehensive online security awareness training program.

The design, development, and delivery of previous custom training for Kelowna International Airport made Harper Learning an easy choice. Our previous engagements led to successful multi-module training programs that are still in use today. When the need arose for security training mandated by Transport Canada, YLW turned to us, a partner they trusted.

The online security awareness program developed by Harper Learning fulfilled all the regulatory requirements while being easy to use and engaging to learnings. We have worked with Harper Learning several times in the past and will continue to use their training development services in the future.

Background

To meet regulatory security awareness requirements, Kelowna International Airport needed an accessible and clear program. In addition to simplifying the training of staff and tenants, the program needed to seamlessly integrate with the existing multi-module online Safety Management System program developed previously, while being easy to use and engaging.

Specific Solutions for Security Protocols

  • Design and development of an interactive online module for Restricted Area Identity Card (RAIC) holders
  • Separate module for YLW ID cardholders

After multiple discovery sessions, our team planned and organized a curriculum for the proposed training. We created a dynamic online learning platform that included:

  • Information about YLW’s Security Awareness Program
  • Types of security risks
  • Employee responsibility for security risk reporting
  • Detailed internal content

The training program had additional modules for RAIC holders, for restricted and non-restricted areas, types of security passes and access areas, and responsibilities as an RAIC holder.

Supercharging security awareness in Kelowna and beyond

It’s our goal to uncover exactly what a client needs, which is why our process is content-driven. We get to know our clients and their unique challenges, and that information allows us to create training that makes a difference in their operations. Our security awareness training was so well received by YLW that other airports began requesting their own versions. Multiple Class 2 and Class 3 locations across Canada are now offering a customized version of the module we created for Kelowna International Airport.

Our team is proud of its role in spreading safety and security across Canada and for exceeding expectations by delivering training that can be reused and customized, contributing to the betterment of the industry.

“Kelowna International Airport (YLW) was Transport Canada’s Class 2 trial airport for establishment of the regulated Airport Security Program (ASP). Harper Learning developed a complete Airport Security Awareness training package for our organization that meets the needs of both RAIC and non-RAIC holders. This security awareness module was designed to meet both the initial and recurrent training needs of the YLW ASP.”
